This is one of Costa Rica's most laid-back beach regions, a stretch of the Nicoya Peninsula where a gentle, reef-calmed bay, a small surf-and-yoga town, and one of the world's great sea turtle nesting sites all sit within a short drive of each other.
🗺️ Where You Are
This pass covers the central Pacific side of the Nicoya Peninsula in Guanacaste province: Playa Garza and Playa Barrigona to the north, the town and bay of Playa Sámara at the center, Playa Carrillo's quiet crescent just south of it, Playa Buena Vista further along the coast, and the Ostional Wildlife Refuge to the north beyond Nosara. It does not cover Nosara or Tamarindo/Junquillal, which sit further up the coast and are their own regions. Much of the land here is tropical dry forest, one of the rarest and most threatened forest types in the world, so expect a mix of scrubby, deciduous woodland that turns green and lush the moment the rains start.
🏖️ Why Sámara's Bay Is Different
Most of Guanacaste's Pacific beaches face the open ocean, but Playa Sámara sits inside a wide, curved bay partly sheltered by a rocky point and an offshore reef that breaks up incoming swell before it reaches the sand. The result is one of the calmest, most consistently swimmable beaches on this coast, a big part of why Sámara has become known as one of Costa Rica's most family-friendly beach towns, alongside a genuinely laid-back, low-key small-town feel: sandy side streets, no high-rises, and a town you can walk end to end in fifteen minutes.
🐢 Surf, Yoga & the Ostional Arribada
Sámara has built a real reputation as a surf and yoga hub, with beginner-friendly waves right in town, a cluster of yoga studios and wellness retreats, and easy access to bigger breaks nearby. A short drive north, past Nosara, the Ostional Wildlife Refuge is one of only a handful of beaches on Earth where olive ridley sea turtles come ashore by the thousands in mass nesting events called arribadas, most reliably from about July to December. Playa Carrillo, just south of Sámara, offers a quieter counterpoint: a long, palm-lined crescent beach that stays largely empty even in high season.

Playa Sámara itself is unusually calm and reef-protected, a genuine plus for families and weaker swimmers, but nearby beaches like Playa Buena Vista and Playa Barrigona have real surf and currents and are not sheltered the same way.

Roads within this region are a mix. The main road between Nicoya and Sámara is paved, but several side roads, including routes toward Barrigona, Buena Vista, and the coastal road north toward Nosara, are partly unpaved, rutted, or cross rivers, and can require a 4x4, especially in green season.

Dry season (roughly December to April) is sunny and busy; green season (May to November) brings warm mornings and heavier afternoon rain, plus lower prices, fewer crowds, and the peak of the Ostional arribada season.

Expect warm, tropical weather year-round, generally 24-33°C (75-91°F), with little seasonal swing in temperature, the real difference between seasons is rainfall, not heat.

Sámara is more of a small town than a resort strip; many restaurants and shops take cards, but cash (colones or dollars) is still important for sodas, taxis, and smaller vendors, and ATMs are limited outside the town center.
